America Is Engaging Islamic Terrorists Right Where We Want Them
Nearly five years ago, foreign-born terrorists attacked Americans on American soil. Criminals such as Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda cohorts had openly declared war against America and in fact had carried out numerous other attacks on American soil and overseas. Our leadership rightly responded militarily against al-Qaeda and put an end to the abusive regimes of the Taliban and, later, that of Saddam Hussein. Presently, we are still engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq, and hoping their fledgling governments will soon be able to assert control and assume security.
Unfortunately, this is a very unstable part of the world, where the United States is viewed as the embodiment of Satan. Islamic militants who desire to destroy America don’t need to seek out our embassies, foreign employees, warships, etc. And thanks to improved national security, they are finding it difficult to mount another attack on our soil. All they need to do is to slip into Iraq or Afghanistan, join the resistance, and there they can fight the American military directly.
The Western Press doesn’t seem to agree with the following point of view, but the truth is that we need the Islamic extremists to engage the American military overseas. That is far more preferable than for them to stage attacks against American civilians and infrastructure. Be assured that they will continue to attack Americans one way or another. The point is that our military is far better equipped to fight the terrorists. So, as unpopular as the war against Terrorism has become, the benefit is that the American military is fighting terrorists on foreign soil, engaging them under the rules of war (as opposed to our criminal justice system), and using our extensive capabilities to bring the war to them 24-7.
Many in the media and politics are calling for a timeline to bring our men and women home. To what end? The terrorists will follow us here and bring the fight to us, whether or not we want it. In fact, strategists fear the next attack may be far worse than that of 9-11. The thought of a nuclear-armed Iran brings to mind the sum of all fears (credit to Tom Clancy). No, America is on the right track to engage the terrorists with our military on foreign soil.
