Talk of Terrorist Threats Spread to India
BBC News just announced that the US Embassy has warned its staff to be aware of several bombing threats where Indian cities are to be targeted in the next several days. These new threats could take place in Delhi and Mumbai (Bombay) ahead of India's Independence Day celebrations there on Tuesday. The US Embassy warned US citizens to keep a low profile and stay clear of hotels and markets.
Police in both cities state that they are working to increase security in the effort to avert a potential attack at a time when many citizens would be celebrating. The Indian government states that the US has not formally issued any specific communications, rather issued an advisory to American staff located in India, but they acknowledge that India has been and is the target of terrorist attacks.
Why is terror spreading into India? At the zenith of the Ottoman Empire before its disintegration in the early 1900's, India was a part of the Muslim caliphate and was therefore considered part of "holy Muslim territory". Remember, in the eyes of the Islamic radical, once a part of the Muslim holy land, always a part of Muslim holy land.
Extremist may consider India a prime target as well due to a large and growing Islamic population that, in their perception, needs to be freed from the grasps of a polytheistic society (a mainly Hindu practicing society). Unfortunately in the eyes of the radical the means to establish change is through violence, and so India has become a prime target for their attacks.
What could be some of the other countries that could be similarly perceived to be Muslim holy land? Other countries that had been a part of the previous Islamic caliphate are: Turkey, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, today's Israel, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Oman, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgstan, and Kazakstan.
As you read this list, it is apparent that a number of these countries already have strong Muslim involvement in their government and others have already been locations of strong terrorist activity.
