What Makes a Terrorist Tick?
An internet search reveals that Muslim Clerics and Imams are either silent on condemnation of terrorism or in fact are supporting it. Even though the Koran strictly forbids murder (see my posting on 8/1) the clerical leaders are twisting the words of the Prophet to rationalize the murder of innocent people. Unfortunately, there are many followers of Islam who are easily inducted into the hatred and desire to avenge perceived wrongs. The faithful of Islam call it the religion of peace, but in reality the peace that they speak of only applies to the faithful practitioners of Islam.
As the reported events of August 10th unfolded, the perpetrators behind the planned bombing of 10 commercial aircraft turned out to be Islamic extremists. Over two dozen have been arrested in the act of plotting the deaths of more than 3,000 innocent people. In the process, these terrorists were also intent on blowing themselves up. Obviously, these terrorists were convinced in their hearts that they were giving up their lives on earth not only to achieve a political goal but also with the expectation of far greater reward in the afterlife. In other words, these terrorists were planning to go on suicide missions after being indoctrinated that their souls would receive great martyr’s rewards in Heaven.
Are these terrorist recruits weak-minded, uneducated, simpletons? Not necessarily. Military leaders have known that men and women will fight for a paycheck but will risk their lives for a medal. Even more so, leaders also know that soldiers will fight and die for a spiritual cause that they believe in. Obviously, the promise of a special place in Heaven has motivated countless terrorists to go on suicide missions and to kill as many people as possible. Carnal fulfillment in Heaven appears to be a central attraction of this promise. However, Heaven is very different from the human experience and is described by Jesus in Matthew 22:30 and Mark 12:25 as a spiritual realm where the risen will be like the angels and that there will not be marriage. An important point here is that if the Prophet Muhammad affirms the Book (that is, the Holy Bible) and Jesus, then Islam must accept these descriptions of Heaven.
This is a foundational problem with Islam. Their clerics take Biblical passages out of context or, as in this case, ignore them completely. Present-day clerics appear in the media with peaceful expressions on their faces and present themselves in a dignified manner. It is easy to see how they can instill others to follow their well-reasoned (but distorted) versions of the Bible. Osama bin Laden and Hassan Nasrallah are good examples of men who have such influence.
How is it then that the terrorists justify mass murder and carnage? Their Prophet and the clerics tell them that Allah’s will for peace on earth is achieved through compliance with Islam. Citing the Koran and numerous commentaries, all Muslims believe that the six billion people on Earth fall into one of three categories: (1) the faithful followers of Islam; (2) the people of the Book (Jews and Christians), subjugated to second class status and paying the Dhimmi tax; and (3) Infidels who must be killed by the hands of the faithful. The more extreme followers of Islam practice jihad (Muslim holy war against infidels) and their goal is to achieve this categorization first on a regional, then global scale. Concurrently, their goals include the reestablishment of the Islamic Caliphate.
That is the truth behind Islam and why followers are convinced that acts of murder and destruction are sanctioned by Allah. Clerics convince them those religious/political acts of murder and destruction will advance the Muslim agenda. If killed in action, then their reward for martyrdom is great, including eternal sexual relations with virgins. (Remember, such carnal fulfillment contradicts the words of Jesus.) Also, the families of martyrs are financially taken care of for life by their terrorist organizations. So, in the mind of the terrorist the end result of a suicide mission achieves several very desirable objectives.
The logic of their jihad is based on the words of the Prophet Mohammed, a warrior with blood on his hands. If their Prophet was a man of war, then it is logical that Allah will also confer special status on warriors who fight in His name. However, when the Bible and the Koran are compared, passages written by the Prophet Muhammad in the Koran are often in direct conflict with the Bible. Specifically, in the New Testament the words of Jesus consistently teach peace. In the Koran the words of Muhammad also teach peace, but if peace is not possible then he lays out detailed instructions on how to wage war. These tenets of their faith explain why vengeance is justified and to be carried out by the “faithful”.
Liberal elements in Western cultures feel that “right wing” Christian-based views are intolerant and judgmental. Such views are mild compared to those of the Islamic faithful. When their reason and negotiation strategies fail, the Islamic view is that the murder of “infidels” is sanctioned by Allah. Remember, subjugation of people into the three categories is a tenet of their faith. So, those in the last category are justifiable targets.
If Islam were truly a religion of peace, as claimed by its followers, then the Clerics and Imams should be heard around the globe urging restraint and condemning violence committed in the name of Allah. The absence of condemnation is indicative that acts of terrorism are in fact a foundational pillar of their religion. Unless the Islamic leadership rejects terrorism then it is clear that even the non-extreme followers of Islam will tacitly approve the violence. As present world events indicate, the religion of Islam fosters a climate of repression, revenge, and violence.
History teaches that domination movements fail because the Human spirit refuses to be shackled by a minority’s view of utopia. Inevitably, regional/world domination benefits a select few. For those few, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In past eras, the regional Caliphs were decadent beyond belief. Their private lives were anything but disciplined in the laws of Islam. Therefore, the reestablishment of an absolute Caliphate would also return the horrors that were committed by past Caliphs. But, that is the Muslim agenda, as practiced and actively pursued by the terrorists. The loss of life may well be staggering before world leaders stand up to declare that the present practice of Islam is contrary to peace and good order.
