Is the United Nations a "Kofi House" Where All We Do Is Talk?
Maybe instead of a "Kofi House" we should call it the "Waffle House"? I just read with interest about Kofi Annan's visit to Iran and talk that Iran has agreed to bolster the peace process between Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Israel.
As a reward for the Iranian statement urging peace in the area, a carrot was thrown out about more talks on the uranium enrichment problem now that the deadline to cease research that has past. It appears now that "Waffles" are being served in addition to "Kofi Talk" at the United Nations as it is clear that the United Nations has no leverage over Iran.
Iran is firm, it will not stop in its quest for advanced nuclear technology for so called "peaceful purposes". President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that research will not stop even while additional negotiations happen.
Iran will never play the "game" the way the West wants it. It is simply not possible for them to do so. Iran will always be wanting to operate outside the bounds of international acceptance and international viewpoints on the issues of state responsibility.
Not sure? What about Iran's moving forward with sponsoring a conference on the scientific evidence of the Holocaust, calling the number of Jewish deaths from the Holocaust exaggerated?
Kofi Annan addressed this specific issue by saying "I think the tragedy of the Holocaust is a sad and undeniable historical fact and so we should really handle that. We have to be careful, words can soothe and words can harm, and we should be careful not to say anything that is used as an excuse for incitement to hatred or violence".
If Iran will not pay heed to the United Nations' sanctions threats on the nuclear issue, do you really think that they are going to play nice on the Holocaust issue. Iran is proving itself to be a dangerous player in the Middle East, a very dangerous player that simply will not follow international rules for the "game".
