Kofi Annan Attempts To Pressure Iran

Kofi Annan, the General Secretary of the United Nations, has attempted to pressure Iranian leaders into complying with UN resolutions to cease uranium enrichment and to stop arming Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iranian negotiators put a positive spin on the meetings about the nuclear issue, but what is most telling is that Koff Annan did not meet with the President of Iran or even with Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei , but rather with Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani.

Do you really think that Ali Larijani has any power to make any agreements or even any decisions? I think not, he is simply a go-between for the real power in Iran, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. Even the President in Iran reports directly to the Iranian Spiritual Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. Remember Iran is not a democracy, but rather a theocracy based on Muslim law with the supreme power in the government being a small cadre of religious leaders with the Ayatollah as the most politically powerful.

Based on the history of the situation on nuclear research and the fact that Iran's political capitaol is on the rise in the region (for standing up to the United Nations in the eyes of states in the Middle East), I just do not see movement on any of these important and complex issues. Iran has proven that it wants to forge its own path without having to be accountable to anyone but itself. It feels that having a nuclear weapon is like joining a "special club" that the US and others are simply intent on keeping it out of. "Hey, Pakistan is there, why not us?"

I for one am not holding my breathe for any miraculous "Kofi inspired" peace plans with Iran now or in the near future.
