The Sheikhs of Dubai: Billion Dollar Wastrels
I read in the news paper the other day that the men of Dubai's ruling family have spent nearly a billion dollars in recent years buying thoroughbred horses in the United States so they could win US horse races. Seems they were tired of dominating the European racing circuit because they have enough money to buy what ever horses or jockeys they want, no matter how absurd the price. Guess they needed a new challenge. A billion dollars for race horses......a billion dollars for race horses.......a billion dollars for race horses.....while countless millions of their Arab brothers and hundreds of thousands of immigrants that work in Dubai in sweatshop conditions live in poverty and misery. It boggles the mind that such a small number of individuals are allowed to squander the wealth that belongs to their people and the future of their country. The oil money the Dubai royal family is flushing down the toilet is all the people in Dubai have, and when that oil is gone in a generation or so, unless wise investments have been made, the people of Dubai will be looking at going back to the stone age because their land will not be able to support the air-conditioning, the people will not have the water resources necessary to survive and the country will not have the technological workforce needed to survive in the 2000 and second century. All thanks to the Maktoum family who flagrantly flushes their country's resources down the drain.
Just think of what a billion dollars would mean in terms helping providing real educations to Palestinians or Iraqis or Afghans or Sri Lankan Muslims to make them and their future generations competitive in the global market place. Think of what a billion dollars could do to curb the scourge of AIDS in Africa. Think of what a billion dollars could do in terms of buying off extremists who revel in exhorting their countrymen to wantonly kill and main each other and their neighbors. Think of what a billion dollars could do to stop hunger and poverty in Gaza and the West Bank. Think of what a billion dollars could do to help generate an economic engine in the Middle East that could rival that of any other country on the planet. But, what do the Dubai royals do? They piss away a billion dollars to win horse races in the USA. And this is only ONE instance of irresponsible spending of Dubai royal family. The incredible financial squandering going on over there in Dubai and in Saudi Arabia by the royal families just cannot be imagined. I can only imagine what a better place the Middle East and the whole world would be if those self absorbed royal families and all their retainers focused on more helping their Arab brothers and sisters and the common person in that part of the world instead of their own selfish pointless luxuries.
