Terrorism Comes To Niger
Terrorist attacks from rebels are being predicted this next week in Niger and Americans are being cautioned to be vigilant. Predicted are attacks on oil facilities, mass bombings, and kidnappings.
Terrorism has an ugly face in our world today. More and more political and religious factions consider violence a means to achieve their ends. One of the big issues that the rebels in Niger are fighting against is the theft of oil wealth from their country. It is a twisted mind that can rationalize destruction of expensive infrastructure as a way to get more oil money back to the people.
Make the damage so great or the security to stay in Niger so difficult and foreign companies that assist Niger and other countries with oil production will pull out without anyone to step in and manage the facilities. Or worse yet pass on the cost to these countries.
There are other ways to push for reform and working with the government is the best. Destruction of the oil facilities will only cause more problems and wreak financial devastation for the general population. I guess that they have not thought out the the foreign oil companies will simply pass the expenses back to Niger, they will not take the profit blow.
So much violence in our world revolves around the issue of oil wealth. What we need is a Martin Luther King or a Ghandi now to lead these oil rich and cash starved countries into peaceful protest and change by working within the system. Violence is never the answer!
